PIANO SERIAL NUMBERS "How old is My Piano?"
Piano buyers, owners, seeking to "estimate price" contact our PIANO ADVISORY (Australian reg'd business providing Free Piano Advice) or they'll refer to the pianoadvisory.com pages.
OzPianoman's favorite:
Grotrian Steinweg Piano 1907 Upright
(see it played on YouTube: ref footnote)
A serial number is thought by many to be helpful in determining a piano's value . . .
Piano Serial Numbers relate to Year of manufacture, information that you can obtain from a few genuine piano web sites.
Piano Advisory links originally comprised other piano gurus, technicians, tuners & industry members who requested inclusion here.
Update for 2012 Unfortunately, the www produces its own breed of unsavory characters.
Porn sites and other undesirables now often hide behind 'expired' piano website names.
Your Piano Advisory display is frequently revised and updated as we strive to showcase the more appropriate identities ...We Do Not BUY & SELL Pianos!
Piano Appraisals? Online Valuations? Read on . . . Take your time . . . LEARN !
There are few experts - and even fewer websites, that can offer much beyond a piano age determination service.
Using piano numbers from Yamaha, Kawai and some Korean made instruments, information is often available for free.
With older pianos and some obscure brands however, it's clearly a more difficult task ...
So "valuation" fees will generally apply in those instances.
Please Note:
1/ Links shown here may include sites not all of which are piano serial number oriented.
2/ Some piano production details are unavailable owing to lost documentation or records not having been kept;
In which case you'd not likely be billed for attempts to determine the piano's age. (Check terms of service to clarify)Indeed, the best "piano numbers" to know might well be your local piano tuners' Telephone numbers.
Online valuations:
Truth is that piano serial numbers can contribute little to the assessment of an instrument's value. Model numbers and photographs may be helpful -
but even so, without an expert's appraisal you will hardly be wiser for having someone "suggest a price" over the phone or through some email service.
Consider :- the Grotrian Steinweg pictured above.
Owner comments "Ivory keys. Sounds ok. Needs tuning, Some notes don't work".
OzPianoman thinks: Oh Boy - another one of Those ...
And yet, I wouldn't mind having a decent 2nd piano in our main teaching studio.
After inspecting soundboard & frame, removing the loose bits from the action with its 3 broken hammers, checking the bridges & pin block ;
And now, having closely examined everything inside, the verdict is :
"Impossible for you to sell in its present condition."
But hey, it is BLACK - might well suit our Teaching Studio setup;
So yes, I have an idea what it's worth to Me.
Reckon it would take me A Day or Two to rectify the problems.
I'm only there however, to appraise & advise...
So I suggest it can be much improved. Any piano technician can fix it ...
"Why not spend a couple of hundred and try advertising it at say $1500?"
Yeah, maybe - but - "What will You give us?" is what they really want to know.
So, I offer them $500 "as is"; Buy the instrument for $600.
Spend a day or three "improving it".
Broke and replaced a few strings along the way but
Wow. Sounds great.
And a year later; Lo & behold - I see one similar advertised for $11,000 .........
So what's my piano Really worth?
And yours ???
Piano Numbers might help to establish its AGE... but then - how does one describe on the phone or by filling out a form, their piano's tuning pin tightness, wrest plank condition, key dip and blubber to a Piano Expert anywhere???

It's now 2012. Since 1998 my web pages have attracted a great deal of attention; And that got me wondering . . .
What if (because world economies are a bit shaky and times are getting tougher), rather than you trying to save a little money ... what if I could suggest a way for you to make GOOD Money instead ???
Found a new site called "How-To-Make-Money.com" that you should take a look at.
Years ago I obtained an early edition of Rob's very affordable ebook called "1,000 Ways to Make Money".
Was totally absorbing and I still refer to it regularly.
1000 ways is way more than just an interesting read! Check it out...
Around a decade ago, this old suburban piano teacher - known locally as OzPianoman, discovered he had somehow become world famous ( ... True! )
All started with a one page website inviting contact from people who simply wanted to save money.
The outcome?
On Google my nickname now dominates the Search results: see for yourself...
Type "oz piano man" or "oz pianoman" into a Google search box.
You might get a Red squiggle under what they assume is a spelling error?
Ignore that.
Directly below it will also say something like: "About 38,900,000 results" and then
"Showing results for piano man Search instead for oz pianoman ?" (... click that one)
Last time I looked, it's listed in more than a million places ....
Thanks Rob !!!
