Piano History, age, value ?

Piano numbers are a guide for Piano owners or the
piano Buyer seeking information about a piano's age.

Piano numbers relate to year of manufacture, information that you can obtain from some genuine piano web sites (more below)

PIANO SERIAL NUMBERS

"How old is My Piano?" At pianoadvisory.com we receive many requests from prospective buyers, owners and players who will supply us with a piano serial number in the hope of being able to determine its age.

Certain websites offer a piano age determination service. Using piano numbers from Yamaha, Kawai and some Korean made instruments, information is often freely available. But with older pianos and some obscure brands it can be more difficult and a small fee may apply.

Please Note:
1/ Links displayed may include sites which are not necessarily piano serial number oriented.
2/ For some pianos, production details are unavailable owing to lost documentation, or records not having been kept ... you might still be billed for research and the attempt to accurately determine a piano's age. (Check terms of service for clarification)

Online valuations:
Piano serial numbers can contribute little to the assessment of an instrument's value. Model numbers and photographs may be helpful - but even so, without an expert's appraisal you will hardly be wiser for having someone "suggest a price" over the phone or through some email service.

"How much is my piano worth?"

An example:- The Grotrian Steinweg pictured above is advertised.
Owner comments: "Sounds good, needs tuning, old ivory keys, some notes aren't working".

I'm considering putting a second piano in one of our teaching studios...
So after inspecting the soundboard, the frame, removing the action with its 3 broken hammers, checking the bridges, testing the pin block and closely examining the inside, I advise them it might be hard to sell "as is", but have an idea what it might be worth to me!
I suggest they should fix it ...spend a couple of hundred dollars and try advertising it at say $1500?.
"What will You give us?"
I offer $500 ... buy the instrument for $600.
Spend a day or two "improving it". A year later I see one advertised for $11,000.

So what's my old piano really worth? How about your own ???

Piano numbers might help to establish its age... but how does one describe, on the phone or by filling in a form, their piano's tuning pin tightness, wrest plank condition, key dip and blubber to a piano Expert anywhere???

Indeed, the best "piano numbers" to know may be your local Tuners' telephone Numbers.
