In general, people just love listening to MUSIC. So let's assume that you are also hearing your share of songs. Among the ones you've heard there will be some popular tunes; Easy melodies to remember! Songs that everyone knows! And once you become just slightly familiar with a catchy tune heard on radio or TV, what happens ? Fact is, you'll probably walk around whistling it, humming it or singing it for days on end. Same with songs we don't particularly like. True ? So in effect, when whistling, humming or singing tunes - you're obviously doing that BY EAR. With a little persistence you can PLAY by Ear too!

Play Piano or Keyboard
Ever watched a child poking around with one finger on a keyboard instrument for a couple of minutes?
Before too long it's: "Hey. Look at Me... I can play 3 Blind Mice !"

To play by ear then, simply means that having heard a song, you can go pick out the tune on a musical instrument of some sort.
Doesn't have to be fancy playing...
Just learn to play the melody notes well enough, for it to become recognizable as "that tune" - and you'll be credited with being able to Play Piano by EAR.

Best instrument to try it on? Why, the Piano of course!
And that's because you can watch what happens as you do it
On a keyboard instrument you actually see the notes that you're playing.

One doesn't have this advantage using guitar, bagpipes, saxophone...
But on a Piano or Keyboard you can observe the notes' relationship or proximity to one another.
And that makes the sequence quite easy to remember!
