Yamaha piano models and prices compared (AU$)
In the 1980's, as brand new "quality grand piano" models, the Yamaha G series were very popular with buyers.
Your Source : OzPianoman & the "world famous" Piano Advisory
Available now as Used pianos they're probably still among the best selling grand pianos in a competitive market. At the time - here in Australia at least, the traditional preference expressed by most players was for "something German". Yamaha challenged and quickly changed the typical piano buyer's thinking!
Oz Piano man says : We don't buy and sell pianos ...
but some 20 years ago a beautifully presented Yamaha piano brochure was sent to me at the Piano Advisory, by a local Piano shop manager. And it's interesting to compare prices with those of today...
For Australia, price increases across the range had been announced, together with the release of "the latest models" -
and he'd noted for me, the new prices above each picture.

Yamaha C5 Grand Piano video notes: Kim rang the Piano Advisory from a remote area of Queensland.
A big fan of his wife's playing, Kim asked me to find him a "good" Baby Grand.
I suggested "a little larger ?" and this fabulous 6 foot 7 inch C5 is next played by my friend distinguished player, Leon.
Couldn't resist my own small tribute to the legendary Mr Joel, but the camera's memory card called a halt to the performance.
Just as well. My brain siezed up about the same time . . . For you Jo: Congratulations!
Piano Prices : Nowadays C models are perhaps Three to Four times higher in price than mid 80's.
Piano technology has changed little in that time.
So you might go see what's available in "mint condition"...

Yamaha G1 ? Good piano ! My favorites however were the G2 and G3 models
An obvious choice for serious players, music teachers, advanced students and professional musicians - these magnificent pianos are always elegant in appearance and very satisfying to play.
Available worldwide, whether you choose to purchase a new Yamaha piano or a used one, be assured that they seldom provide less than "superior piano performance".
Whatever your model of choice may be - it should be obtainable with an excellent warranty.
With secondhand Japanese pianos, a dealer may provide similar warranty cover to what is available from the factory.
Be advised however, that Piano makers themselves seldom offer any direct customer support, unless you purchase their product New from an approved dealer - so piano buyers seeking a factory backed guarantee should ensure that they buy the new product only.
The C models might now be classed as "the flagship" of their range of grand pianos. But previously the G models were among the world's most popular, quality grand pianos in domestic sales - and had been for decades.
The G2 in particular was a more stimulating instrument than the G1 model (we thought it merely "a furniture piece") and at 5'7" long (170 cm), the G2 model was the instant choice for the seasoned pro ... especially those heavy handed Jazz players who just loved its "GRUNT". G2 's were soon to be found in Recording Studios everywhere.
Great feel. Sumptuous sound. Stupendous bass ... And they seemed to hold their tuning very well too.
A most impressive model altogether.
So please - Do go for the G2 size in preference to the "BABY" ... it's only a few inches longer but you'll never regret spending the few extra dollars it might cost you.
In the first few years of the 1980's - whilst employed in retail piano sales, I noticed the rapid, universal acceptance of their entire selection of musical instruments.
The world responded positively to Yamaha, their new mass production techniques, their affordability - and the incredible piano technology which Yamaha pioneered.
No other maker seemed able to compete with Yamaha's marketing strategies in those days - and few today can ever hope to match their success in the "music business".
Yamaha is justifiably proud of what they have achieved in a century of piano making and their dedication to quality is reflected in every aspect of the way Yamaha makes pianos.
There are thousands of parts in a piano.
Yamaha even makes the machines that produce the parts - and the ones that assemble them as well.
