In their "Professional" piano range, the most prestigious vertical models were -

BEFORE BUYING - the piano expert says...

yamaha piano U3 & others...(cont.) Some 20 years ago however, a local Piano dealer sent a Yamaha Piano brochure when Yamaha piano price increases were announced with the release of their latest models.
And the merchant had kindly noted the new prices* for the currently in-demand Yamaha upright pianos.

You may find it interesting to compare those with Piano Prices today.
Available worldwide, whether you choose to purchase new or used, these models deliver "superior piano performance" and excellent warranties are usually offered.

On secondhand Japanese pianos, a dealer may provide similar warranty cover to what is available from the factory. Be advised however, that unless you purchase their product New from an Approved dealer, piano makers seldom offer any direct customer support; So piano buyers seeking a factory backed guarantee should ensure that they buy New only.

Yamaha Piano Price : U1 $6595 - U3 $7195 - UX $7395 ($au circa 1987... 5 yrs earlier they were about 30% cheaper).
* New Piano prices today: Add 100%, 150%(?) Talk to me about Used pianos; Prices here in Melbourne are VERY competitive !

Update for 2011 YAMAHA PIANO PRICES : Professional Upright Pianos:
An obvious choice for serious players, music teachers, advanced students and professional musicians - these "top of the line" pianos are certainly elegant in appearance and very satisfying to play.
The full size UX and Yamaha U3 models at 131 cm (52" app) - definitely "the flagship" in their range of professional upright pianos - and among the world's most popular quality uprights for some 3 decades.

About My Comments . . . OzPianoman says
I'm neither associate of, agent for, or employee of Yamaha or their dealer network.
My observations are those of a satisfied user... I also enjoy tuning and servicing Yamaha pianos privately for their owners.
OzPianoman provides his free advice in the hope that long held, popular misconceptions about relative piano "quality" may one day be dispelled.

In the first few years of the 1980's - whilst employed in retail piano sales, I observed rapid, universal acceptance of Japanese products among buyers of musical instruments. The world responded positively to Japan's new mass production techniques, the affordability of Japanese pianos and incredible piano technology which Yamaha had pioneered.
No other maker seemed able to compete with Yamaha's marketing strategies in those days -
and few today can ever hope to match their success in the "music business".

Yamaha is justifiably proud of what they have achieved in a century of piano making and their dedication to quality is reflected in every aspect of the way it makes pianos. There are thousands of parts in a piano -
Yamaha even makes the machines that produce the parts and assemble them as well.
